Ericsson and Intel have entered a technical collaboration to enable support in Ericsson Cloud Container Distribution (CCD) of a set of plugins and microservices from Open Network Edge Services Software (OpenNESS), an open source software initiative from Intel. OpenNESS is a Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF) certified edge computing software toolkit that helps onboard and manage applications and virtual network functions in an optimized manner for performant edge platforms.

We are pleased to announce our 21.03 releases of OpenNESS and the Intel Distribution of OpenNESS, our first release for 2021 and our eighth quarterly release since the project started. In 21.03 we introduce important new innovations, steady enhancements to existing features, and upgrades to our supported applications and operating system.
One of our more notable innovations is the addition of new accelerators to our access edge experience kit. Similar to our earlier experience kits for 5G private wireless and software-defined networking in a wide area network (SD-WAN), it is an optimized reference architecture to help streamline RAN deployments using Intel® vRAN Dedicated Accelerator ACC100 (Pomona Lake) and Intel® Ethernet Controller E810 with DDP (Columbiaville) for fronthaul and mid-haul networking. We are pleased to announce the 20.12 releases of OpenNESS and the Intel Distribution of OpenNESS, our fourth and final release cycle of the year. This is one of the most feature rich releases in a while and is consistent with our longer-term vison to introduce new and enhanced capabilities that address key challenges at the edge. As part of this focus on innovation, several of the new capabilities in this release are being made available as alpha quality on top of our previous fully beta quality release. We are pleased to announce the 20.09 release for both OpenNESS and Intel Distribution of OpenNESS. Some of the highlights for this release include support for Istio service mesh, deployment of OpenNESS on Microsoft Azure, and a new Converged Edge Reference Architecture (CERA) Experience Kit for deploying a 5G UPF and AI, IOT workloads at the Near Edge. Istio is an industry standard and open source service mesh for managing microservices based architectures. In November 2019, China Unicom, together with ZTE, Intel, and Tencent, successfully completed the MEC-scale network trial commercial operation in Shenzhen under the 4G / 5G live network environment to launch China Unicom's edge MEC platform (CUC-MEC Platform). Intel, along with other partners, were awarded ‘Best new Catalyst’ for their ‘Becoming EDGY’ demonstration during the Digital Transformation Asia, TM Forum Event (12-14 November 2019, Kuala Lumpur).
The team demonstrated a blueprint for an edge cloud lifecycle manager and showcased the solution value in the deployment of several edge use cases by a Telco Network Operator.
