FAQs

Q. What is the new Intel Distribution of OpenNESS?

A new version of OpenNESS that includes all the features and capabilities of our open sourcedistribution of OpenNESS but with support for additional new technologies like 5G. A license is required to download and use.

Q. Why has it been introduced?

The Intel Distribution of OpenNESS has been introduced to protect sensitive Intel IP and to deliver optimized performance using Intel hardware and software. As OpenNESS evolves, we anticipate the Intel Distribution of OpenNESS will become increasingly feature rich and compelling versus the open source distribution.

Q. Is the Intel Distribution of OpenNESS released as source code or binaries?

The Intel Distribution of OpenNESS is available as source code but is protected by a license and available for download only after the license has been signed. Intel has no plans to release a binary version of the Intel Distribution of OpenNESS.

Q. Which distribution should I use?

The open source distribution will remain the primary choice for many users. Fully open source and released under the Apache 2.0 license it provides a rich set of features, samples applications, scripts, and collaterals to accelerate edge deployments. Features which are essential for OpenNESS will always be placed in the open source distribution. Intel will continue to support and release new versions of OpenNESS at the same pace and with the same innovations you’ve come to expect.

The Intel Distribution of OpenNESS is an enhanced version of OpenNESS. It includes all of the features of the open source distribution plus select new capabilities optimized for Intel based hardware and software platforms. It is intended for users and organizations requiring support for rapidly evolving technologies like 5G. Please reach out to your Intel representative to learn more and decide if this is the right distribution for you.

Q. How will support for 5G change starting in the 20.06 release of OpenNESS?

Beginning in our 20.06 release, new features and updates to 5G will only be provided to the Intel Distribution of OpenNESS. Existing users and organizations may continue to use the 5G code in the open source distribution without concern, but they will need to move to the Intel Distribution of OpenNESS to access the latest features. Intel will continue to provide support and bug fixes to the 5G code in the open source distribution.

Q. What is required to get access to each distribution?

The open source distribution of OpenNESS requires no special steps to access or use. The code, documentation, sample applications, experience kits, Ansible scripts, etc. are all easily accessible from github.com/open-ness.

Access to the Intel Distribution of OpenNESS requires a license and access is restricted on github.com. Please reach out to your Intel representative to learn more or click on the link here to request access.

Q. What are the terms and conditions for each distribution?

The open source distribution of OpenNESS is freely available to download, use, and modifyunder the terms of the Apache 2.0 license.

The Intel Distribution of OpenNESS is restricted to run on Intel platforms and a signed license must be in place to access the code and to use. The license grants users permission to modify the code but not to redistribute without a license in place between Intel and the 3rd party.

The Intel Distribution of OpenNESS is a combination of code from the open source distribution and new, proprietary code. All code from the open source distribution remains available under the Apache 2.0 license. All proprietary code is subject to the restrictions of the license for the Intel Distribution of OpenNESS.

Q. What is the impact of the Intel Distribution of OpenNESS on Intel’s Smart Edge positioning and strategy?

Smart Edge remains Intel’s commercial grade edge solution for on premises deployments. Smart Edge offers a hardened product, premium support, and a track record proven commercial deployments. The Intel Distribution of OpenNESS does not change our positioning or strategy for Smart Edge and the two offerings remain complementary and address different market needs. For partners requiring solutions for the network edge, 5G networking, or who requireaccess to source code, the open source distribution or Intel Distribution of OpenNESS will be the preferred options.
